Teatro Bellini

Via Romeo, Acireale

English Version

The Bellini Theatre opened in 1870. It was for a century the symbol of the great social growth, and economic policy while the city of Acireale was under the control of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. At that time Acireale was one of the most important districts of Sicily, also called ” City of Studies ” for the presence of many accredited colleges where studied much of the youth of Eastern Sicily and southern Calabria. This involved the financing of numerous facilities dedicated to education and health; dates in the same period and the draft of the SPA of Santa Venera. It was decided to provide the city of a Theater which soon became a pole of attraction for the nobility and the intellectuals of the time, since there was still the Massimo Bellini in Catania.

The Theater is located in via Romeo that is a very important street, it’s connected to another important street called “the way of sea” because it arrives to the seaside town of Santa Maria La Scala. It is a classical example of “Italian theater” featuring a foyer, a large audience with doubled party hall, stage scenes and with a lower area for the orchestra, and a system of stages of various kinds and levels which were rented by aristocratic families to the theater seasons. The vaulted ceiling was painted by the artist Spina Capritti Patti. The Theater was designed by the architect Carmelo Sciuto.

A huge fire from causes still unknown destroyed the Theater in 1952, with the only exception of the parts not made of wood: the foyer and the Neoclassical monumental prospectus that we can still admire today. It was drafted a reconstruction project to bring the Theater into original condition. But were made several changes: the structure was built of reinforced concrete and two wings were added to adapt the Theater to the new regulations. The work was interrupted for lack of funds and the Theater is still incomplete.

In 2014, the City of Acireale decided to renew the interest to this important area of the city, forming a foundation that was responsible to re-open part of the structure for the realization of cultural events, and to develop a new restoration project.
